Hey guys, a couple of really quick things:
1) Games will be at our place this week. Jessica will be out of town for the weekend, so I'll be taking on all four kids, which means that we need to be at our place so that the twins can finish their naps.
2) Gabe, will you be able to leave your kids at home? I know Jess and Em aren't getting together this weekend. If your kids stay home then things will be manageable, especially if my mom ends up taking the two older kids for a couple of hours.

Other than that, things should proceed fairly normally. Gabe, if you want to bring pizza again, I at least would be down with that. And I think we'll be all set to proceed with some role playing goodness at the normal time!

Since this coming Saturday will be our last VG night before Lent, I was wondering since it's Olympic season, would you guys be interested is renting Sonic and Mario at the Winter Olympic Games?

Hey guys, Lent is less than a week away, so this Saturday is our last VG before Lent. Anyone else interested in doing another VG fast like we did a few years ago? I had a couple of thoughts for how to spend Saturday evenings instead:

Board Games - A couple of you have asked about doing more board gaming, and this would be a decent time to do some of that.
Role Playing - This might encourage me to get off my mental duff and get my adventure put together to run you guys through.
Running around - as the daylight gets longer we could even do something extraordinary like taking the kids (at least the ambulatory ones) to the park and playing disc golf or something, and then coming back after an hour or so to crash and hang out.
Get drunk - not one of my better ideas, but if we get desperate we could always go the route of debauchery!

Any other thoughts about how to spend Lent as a group? If we wanted to be extra untraditional, we could even invite the girls to hang out with us on Saturday nights while we're doing board games/park/whatever (probably not the getting drunk one tho). Anyone not at all interested in giving up the veegee this Lent? I'd say that if one person isn't on board we should just skip it this year.

My friend Ethan Nicolle, the comic book artist who created Chumble Spuzz, has a new online comic series called Axe Cop.
Unlike his past comics, Axe Cop is not his creation because it all came from the mind of his kid brother. It's a really fun series because you have Ethan's great drawings telling stories that follow the story logic of a 5 year old boy. I love it and apparently it's getting a lot of attention in the online media! Check it out!

Those Darn Kids - The Koopalings

I keep talking about the mini bosses in our new Super Mario game but I can never remember there names. Well here ya go!

The Koopalings are Bowser's 7 kids. Each one was sent out to guard the various lands of Mushroom World, and would use their Airship Fortresses to do so. After they were defeated the first time, Bowser sent them out to guard his castles in Dinosour World. Their latest appearance is in the New Super Mario Bros.
The Koopalings are: Larry Koopa (AKA Cheatsy) is the youngest, but his innocent appearance is merely a facade for his sneaky nature. He loves conning people and cheating. Lemmy and Iggy Koopa (AKA Hip and Hop) are twins, and they both sport the same colourful hairdo. Iggy is the geek of the family, and likes reading books and studying. This also makes him the weakest. Lemmy is the clown of the family, and loves balancing about on his favourite ball all the time. Morton Koopa Jr. (AKA Bigmouth) is a blabbermotuh, and loves talking too much. He's also considered a grouch. Roy Koopa (AKA Bully) is a real tough guy, and loves to beat up his siblings, especially Iggy. Wend O. Koopa (AKA Kootie Pie) is a spoiled brat, and always has to have her way. If she does't get what she wants, she starts screaming and throwing tantrums. Finally, Ludwig von Koopa (AKA Kooky) is the oldest, and also the smartest. He loves inventing and composing music, and is Bowser's favourite kid, at least until Bowser Jr. was born, but Bowser Jr. is not considered a Koopaling.

And then there's this guy, Kamek the Magikoopa.

Tomorrow night ONLY, Mario vs. Sonic Olympics will be featured on the large screen. The game gets sent back to Gamefly Sunday (okay, Monday), so this is the time to check it out.
We should discuss plans to Role Play, so I know when I should start getting campaign, characters, materials, etc. ready. I'm thinking about doing a Game Night session and then seeing if we can work in a later session with Ted before he leaves.
There are a couple of games I'm interested in purchasing in the near future, and it would be nice to know who would like to contribute (so I can plan money expenditures).

A little while ago I learned of an adventurer RPG called The Rise of the Argonauts.I'm super excited about an original game based on the on the story of Jason and the Argonauts but what and how they went about designing it is awesome!
Check out this design of Medusa:First off, this gorgon freak'n huge in the game play, and secondly instead of just using snakes as part of the design, they also incorporated snake-like species such as eels.
The design I'm very pleased with is their interpretation of Hercules:The form of his body is something I have not seen done in regards to this character and I love it!!

Mega Animation

I've always thought that the best way to portray Mega Man is through cell animation, Anime to be specific. I'm not a big fan of Anime but for some subject matter it is very appropriate. There was an American animated Mega Man cartoon series and it wasn't bad; however, it took artistic liberties with the design of the characters in order to give a more "American" look to it.

When it comes to the an animated version of Mega Man (or Rock Man in Japan) I really want it to be literal. Here are a few animated clips of cartoons that I think hits right on the nose.

Okay guys, the pizza calendar has been created, and you have all been invited to create a Google Calendar account and join the calendar. This Sunday, Mom has volunteered to buy pizza. The last person to buy pizza (before tonight) was (I think) me. (I thought about it Gabe, and I'm pretty sure that I took home the leftovers from the time it was just you and me.) So that means it's Gabe or Matt's turn to sign up for the first weekend in August, and then the other one can sign up, and then Josh and I will sign up again.

When I know what weekend I'm doing food, I'll probably try to get a head count so I can know how much food to bring, but I'll worry about that later.

First, just wanted to encourage everyone to donate to the Smash Bros: Brawl fund. I know we had all talked about chipping in previously, but now the chips are down and it's time to see money and mouths are in the same places. I figure if everyone gives $10, then I don't end up paying more than about $15, which sounds about fair to me.

For those of you who haven't played it yet (which is everyone except me and Herch) it ROXXORS! We spent last Sunday playing the adventure mode in 2 player mode. We played for about 3 hours, on top of the 2 or 3 hours that Josh B and I played on Friday, and we're still not half way through the adventure.

And yes, there were at least two cut scenes where Matt and I agreed that Josh K. would pee his pants. We'll have to see if we can go back and replay them somehow.

Second, check out this picture and see if you can tell me what made me decide it was worth the screencapture. To remove the obvious guess, it has nothing to do with the big picture of Sonic.

Oh, and one more thing: Anyone know whose turn it is to buy pizza?

The fantasy series followed three cousins from the Bone family who are small, white and bald humanlike creatures with big noses. The trio are run out of their hometown and find themselves in a mysterious valley where they are separated and hunted by other creatures. They are taken in by a girl named Thorn and her grandmother, and find out that the valley is threatened by an evil force called the Lord of the Locusts.
The series ran irregularly from 1991-2004. Scholastic has been publishing the collected stories in graphic novel format since 2005, selling more than 1 million copies so far.
An animated version was in development at Nickelodeon Films but fell through, partly because Smith was displeased that the studio was aiming it for kids and wanted the film to include pop songs.
A decision on what kind of format Bone should take -- live-action or animated or both -- will be based on filmmaker meetings.

I really, really, really, REALLY, REALLY hope that it's going to be cell animated!!!! But it probubly won't. SIGH

There is a new Sam and Max PC game that is available! (sounds of S&M fans rejoicing) What’s unique about this game is that it is being released overtime in episodes like a cartoon series. Season one has already been released and they’re already into season two! Check out the official website of Tell Tale Games.

The really cool part of this whole thing for me is that Steve Purcell (the creator of S&M) is creating a new S&M comic! This sort of "graphic novel" is being release entirely online in pieces kind of like the game. Steve told me when I met him at the Comic Con in San Diego, that once he has completed the comic he will publish it with a combined republication of the original comics. I can’t wait! Steve also told me that the animated series will eventually be released on DVD at some point in either the fall or the spring. Hey guys, bad news.

Monday, Mom turned her TV on and nothing happened. She's sure it's not our fault because she was watching tv after we all left Sunday night, but it means no tv for this Sunday. If I can swipe the projector from work this weekend, we can still game-on, and with an even bigger screen, but otherwise we migh thave to figure out an alternative activity and/or meeting place.

I'll keep you all posted re: equipment.

Oh, and I think it's Klutch's turn to pay for 'za.

Hey guys!
I went to Comic Con '07 last weekend in San Diego and guess who I bumped into?I asked someone at The Behemoth stand about an update on Castle Crashers. They still don't have set release date nor do they know if it will be released on a Nintendo game system. At this point it will be released on the X-Box.
We also got some pics of this great character statue of Mario!Aside from video game stuff, I visited the great Doug TenNapel and got a signed copy of his lastest book Black Cherry.You guys are more then welcome to borrow it.

Here is the order of pizza purchase as I understand it. This is based off of who bought pizza most recently, so if I'm forgetting someone's recent purchase, please correct me.

6/17 - Klutch (last purchased who knows when?)
6/24 - Meranalf (last purchased who knows when?)
7/1 - Zhitnik (last purchased who knows when?)
7/8 - Giblets (last purchased who knows when?)
7/15 - Dewb (last purchased on 5/27?)

These dates may also be subject to change as the MotherShip may decide to purchase pizza at some point in this range of dates. If so, we'll just bump things back from that date.

Also note that this list does not take into account things like people who regularly buy soda and/or dessert, so if we want to issue a special dispensation for Ted, then he can skip his week.

And finally, if you know you are not going to be here for your week, please inform everyone so we don't have to go hungry. If you feel that you don't come often enough to justify having to pay for pizza (again, primarily Ted) then further indulgences may be offered.

Hopefully actually keeping track of these things will keep us from always saying, "Whose turn is it to buy pizza this week?"

New Stuff!

I just thought I would add a couple of new purchases to this blog for those of you who are interested. Note that neither of these purchases will affect you unless you have access to a Nintendo DS:

1) Nintendo DS Browser! Yes, I jumped in with all my Nintendo and Opera fanboyness and bought the Opera cartridge for the DS. It's pretty cool, and I've already used it to post a couple of things on a forum. I'll bring it on Sunday and see if I can find a wireless connection to 'borrow' so I can show it off.

2) I just won an auction on eBay for Star Wars II: The Original Series for the DS. Soon to ship, then I'll bring it along and show it off. We can play up to four player over DLaP, so Josh, I'll let you know when you should bring Katie's DS.

One last thought regarding potential future purchases:
Mario Party 8 (I think) for the Wii is due out soon. I have heard nothing but good reviews, and I think this might well fall into the category of something we should think about getting.

Also, those of you who haven't put any money into the Wii yet and are feeling bad about it, we could still use a couple of Nunchucks.

Top 5 Games

Well, it's time for a good old fashioned top 5 list. These are the top 5 video/computer games I have played. I take into account graphics, gameplay, and replayability, but most of all I'm looking at the ones that gave me the most continued enjoyment. Also, only single games are included, not entire series (though that does leave it open to all five coming from the same series).

5. Scorched Earth (PC)
Death's Heads, Hot Napalm, and Funky Bombs are only some of the many varied weapons available to you to blow up you opponents' tanks. Countless hours of enjoyment were spent in my high school computer science class playing this game. Ten years removed from high school, and I'm still playing it.

4. Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo 64)
I went with this version over the GameCube one because this is the one we played hours on end back in Texas. And when things got dull, we could always spice them back up by playing with our feet or upside-down.

3. Commander Keen in Goodbye Galaxy: Secret of the Oracle (PC)
This was one of the first (if not the first) side-scrolling, jump-around-and-get-all-the-goodies game I played on the PC. My siblings and I played it so much we had just about every level memorized. The fourth installment had better graphics and gameplay than the first trilogy, and while I may like the fifth one a little better now, Commander Keen 4 will still have that unshakable special place in my gaming history.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)
No matter what way you slice it, whichever criteria you may use, Ocarina of Time is a great game. It strikes a nice balance between puzzle solving and smiting baddies, and very rarely is a world so filled out as it is in this one.

1. Metroid II: Return of Samus (Nintendo Game Boy)
This was the first game my siblings and I purchased for our Game Boy, and it is the game that has gotten the most use. It is the first game of it's sort that I was able to beat every time (being able to save really helped), and with my brother, we managed to figure out every secret and goodie the game has to offer. And yes, I can beat it in under two hours every time.
